| About a month ago, one the docs asked me to translate for this pt who speaks only Mandarin. She was in her early 50's, married, and had 2 kids both around my age. She had no significant past medical history and was in for coughing for the past 6 mos. Tests were all negative, and after 30 mins of extensive Q&A, the doctor concluded that she had asthma and was allergic to some family pets. Today, that same doc was passing by me and stopped to tell me that the patient died a week ago. Apparently, she came back again after being discharged with new complaints of abdominal pain in addition to the persistant coughing. They ran some further tests and found out that she had cancer all over her body. She had a rare form that moves extremely fast and "quiet", and usually the cause of death is not determined until the autopsy. Nothing could have been done even if it was diagnosed the first time. I hate, hate hearing about cancer especially when it spreads all over. I'm thinking of her, of her husband, and her kids. This could happen to anyone of us and anytime...is there anything more we could do? |
